Global Dimensions of the African Diaspora

(Second Edition)

Edited by Joseph E. Harris

Editor Joseph Harris writes in his Introduction to Global Dimensions of the African Diaspora that the concept of the African Diaspora “subsumes the global dispersion (voluntary and involuntary) of Africans throughout history; the emergence of a cultural identity abroad based on origin and social condition; and the psychological or physical return to the homeland, Africa.” “Thus viewed,” Harris concludes, “the African Diaspora assumes the character of a dynamic, continuous and complex phenomenon stretching across time, geography, class, and gender.” The book contains selected essays from the first and second convenings of the African Diaspora Institute held, respectively, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Nairobi in Kenya, along with other notable presentations.

This revised edition offers readers a broader geographical scope than presented in the first edition, and it places greater emphasis on historical and sociopolitical analyses. New essays that examine the African experience and slavery in the Mediterranean, the black experience in Brazil, African religious retentions in Latin American countries, and essays by women that focus on the experience and contributions of African women of the Diaspora address significant areas that were not discussed in the earlier volume.
