Manichean
Psychology:
Racism and the Minds of People of African Descent by Camara Jules P. Harrell
A full understanding of racism means looking at the three processes of racism: the events that support and perpetuate it, the universal and personal mental processes of the victim that respond to it, and the state of mind and behavior that react to it. Most of the current research is concerned with the third process, with scholars analyzing such reactions as deteriorated family structures, negative attitudes, violent behavior, and poor academic achievement. Some excellent studies have also looked at the events that cause racism. But very little research has been done on the second process, the mental response to racism. It is the purpose of Manichean Psychology: Racism and the Minds of People of African Descent to fill this void. Camara Jules P. Harrell examines the mental processes that occur in a racist environment, illustrating how people perceive a racist event and how it produces reactive behavior. About the Author
Camara Jules P. Harrell is professor of psychology, Howard University. He has published articles in Black Psychology, Psychology Bulletin, Biological Psychology, and the International Journal of Psychophysiology.
