Russia and the Negro: Blacks in Russian History and Thought by Allison Blakely
Winner of the Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award of 1988, this groundbreaking study of the Black presence in Imperial and Soviet Russia provides an intriguing and comprehensive look at native Russians of African descent and black immigrants to the region. Russia and the Negro: Blacks in Russian History And Thought looks at the dark-skinned, woolly headed Colchians of the Black Sea region to the celebrated military engineer Abraham Hannibal and his descendant, 19th-century writer Alexander Pushkin. Blakely also scrutinizes the Soviet perception of America’s racial problems and Soviet/African relations as revealed in Russian art, literature, ideology, and politics.
