Africa and Africans as Seen by
Classical Writers: The William Leo Hansberry African History Notebook Series (Vol. 2) Edited by Joseph E. Harris Africa and Africans as Seen by Classical Writers, an illuminating study of classical references to the African continent and its people, presents essays drawn from the private papers of that eminent pioneer of African Studies, Howard William Leo Hansberry. In these essays, which he amassed while teaching at Howard University from 1922 to 1959, Hansberry discusses and analyzes the African designations in the writings of Homer, Hesiod, Ovid, Virgil, Herodotus, Pliny, Cassius, and others in a lively, highly readable manner. Africa and Africans as Seen by Classical Writers reveals Hansberry’s extensive knowledge of ancient Africa and confirms one of his major premises: that relations between blacks (Ethiopians) and Greeks of the post-Homeric age were more extensive than is usually noted by classical historians and scholars. Like its companion volume Pillars in Ethiopian History (Volume I of the William Leo Hansberry African History Notebook Series), Africa and Africans as Seen by Classical Writers is intended for scholars and general readers alike. Both volumes are edited by noted African Diaspora expert Joseph E. Harris.
