An African Victorian Feminist:

The Life and Times of Adelaide Smith Casely Hayford, 1868-1960

by Adelaide M. Cromwell

An African Victorian Feminist: The Life and Times of Adelaide Smith Casely Hayford, 1868-1960, by Adelaide M. Cromwell, chronicles the life and times of an early 20th-century feminist and education innovator in Sierra Leone, one of the first African women to write of her experiences in colonial Africa. Born in Sierra Leone but educated in England and Germany, Adelaide Hayford later returned to live in Sierra Leone, where she committed her life to the education of young women. In the face of opposition from colonial authorities and detractors among her own Creole elite, she founded a school for girls where she sought to combine the best of European and African life. This vivid portrait presents Hayford’s life as that of an uncompromising women’s advocate and includes portions of her unedited memoirs.
