Afro-American History: Sources for Research Edited by Robert L. Clarke Afro-American History: Sources for Research is the edited record of a 1973 conference that demonstrated the diverse sources and creative stratagems available for the study of African American life and history through the National Archives and Records Service. Contributing to this volume are scholars who have long been a part of the trend toward more expansive research on African American genealogy, the familial values of the freedmen and freedwomen, and the need to examine written as well as oral accounts. They cite records well-known to researchers as well as those that remain relatively untapped such as military records, personal letters and accounts written by and to blacks, material relating to different presidents and their administrations, and records of black political participation. Many of their essays are supplemented by photographs and reproductions of documents selected from archival holdings. The National Archives conference series was initiated in 1967 to acquaint scholars with this wealth of materials and to provide a forum for the discussion of issues and problems relevant to both researchers and archivists. Conference papers were delivered by outstanding authorities in their fields and frequently by persons who, as emissaries, explorers, and administrators, influenced the course of events in our time. It is hoped that these publications will prove to be a permanent contribution to scholarship and a reference source for scholars and students alike.
