Basic Currents in Nigerian Foreign Policy

by Mae C. King

In Basic Currents of Nigerian Foreign Policy, author Mae C. King draws on her experience as a student and teacher of international relations to produce an insightful analysis of Nigerian foreign affairs from the time of independence from Britain in 1960 through the mid-1980s. Employing an innovative concept that she terms “relations with strangers” as a basis for her discussion, King contends that continuity in Nigeria’s foreign policy during those crucial years in the country’s history emanated from three basic currents: colonial heritage, Pan-Africanism, and nonalignment. These three dynamic forces, she claims, have shaped the foreign policy decisions of the civilian and military regimes that have ruled Nigeria. She analyzes each force in turn and details the impact each has had on Nigeria’s relations with the world, providing a framework for understanding the continuity of Nigeria’s foreign policy and speculating about Nigeria’s future role in world affairs.
