Clio was a Woman:

Studies in the History of American Women

by Mabel E. Deutrich and Virginia C. Purdy

Clio Was a Woman: Studies in the History of American Women, edited by Mabel E. Deutrich and Virginia C. Purdy, presents the proceedings of a conference held in 1976 and attended by scholars well known in women’s history.  Anne Firor Scott, author of The Southern Lady and other important works, is coauthor of the opening chapter with William H. Chafe, whose book, The American Woman, is considered to be a classic. Joseph P. Lash is a Pulitzer Prize winner. Most of the essayists cite records in the National Archives, demonstrating exciting uses of this rich resource. George C. Chalou provides a study of women during the Revolutionary War; Penny Martelet examines women’s roles in the Woman’s Land Army; Mary W. M. Hargreaves looks at women during the Great Depression; and Susan Hartmann and Eleanor F. Straub discuss women’s issues that gained prominence during World War II.  Other essays address black women, average and famous (Chester W. Gregory and Elaine M. Smith); American Indian women (Mary E. Young); female abolitionists (Judith Wellman); and the nation’s first ladies (Edith James and Joseph P. Lash).
