Historical Judgments
Reconsidered: Selected Howard University Lectures in Honor of Rayford W. Logan Edited by Genna Rae McNeil and Michael R. Winston
Historical Judgments Reconsidered: Selected Howard University Lectures in Honor of Rayford W. Logan marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Howard University Department of History and honors Logan, a former chairman and distinguished scholar of the department. This collection reassesses long-standing interpretations of African and African American history. The volume is divided into five sections covering “Perspectives on the History of Africa,” “Reinterpretations of Slavery and Reconstruction,” “Racial Ideologies and Race Relations in United States History,” “The Uses of Biography,” and “Content and Context in Historical Interpretation.” Contributors include the following outstanding scholars: Mary Frances Berry; John W. Blassingame; John Hope Franklin; George M. Frederickson; Vincent G. Harding; Louis R. Harlan; Joseph E. Harris; A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr.; Nathan I. Huggins; David Levering Lewis; Benjamin Quarles; Frank M. Snowden, Jr.; and C. Vann Woodward. Much of the appeal of these essays lies in the new perspectives they bring to bear on persistent issues encountered by historians. These new insights will undoubtedly contribute to a reconsideration of many established historical judgments.
