Jean Toomer:

A Critical Evaluation

Edited by Therman O'Daniel

The late Therman B. O’Daniel, co-founder of the College Language Association Journal and its editor for 21 years, nurtured scholarship on writer, poet, and dramatist Jean Toomer, publishing more than 30 articles and one special issue devoted to the author in 1974. Jean Toomer: A Critical Evaluation, edited by O’Daniel, gathers 46 essays, including several first published in the CLA Journal and in other publications that pioneered Toomer research.  Vintage essays by eminent scholars such as Darwin T. Turner, and selections prepared especially for this volume including three by Toomer biographer Nellie Y. McKay, capture the divergent perspectives and literary interpretations that have developed about Toomer and his work since the 1960s. Jean Toomer: A Critical Evaluation also includes O’Daniel’s own revealing interview with Mae Wright Peck about her courtship with Toomer.  The thematic arrangement of selections in this volume makes it highly accessible to students.
