A Knot in the Thread: The Life and Work of Jacques Roumain by Carolyn Fowler
When he died in 1944, Jacques Roumain was mourned for both his lyrical literary works and his hard-won political convictions. Roumain was a journalist, poet, politician, diplomat, professor, novelist, short-story writer, ethnographer, and revolutionary. In all these incarnations, he searched for tools to help the cause of human solidarity. A Knot in the Thread, The Life and Work of Jacques Roumain by Carolyn Fowler provides insight into Roumain’s complex world. Roumain, who lived only 37 years, demonstrated in that short time a remarkable evolution through his essays, editorials, letters, poems, and novels. Fowler traces Roumain’s life through his published and unpublished writings, weaving her text from his well-known works, such as La Proie et L’Ombre, Les Fantoches, La Montagne Ensorcelee, Le Champ du Potier, and Gouverneurs de la Rosée, as well as from original manuscripts and letters.
