Song for Mumu:

A Novel

by Lindsay Barrett

Song for Mumu, a first novel by Jamaican author Lindsay Barrett, was hailed upon first publication as “a primitive masterpiece” and “a blood-chilling tragedy” with “a sort of lingering power which will make it difficult to forget.”  The work conveys, in lyrical manner, a fictional tale of the loves and death of a star-crossed woman-child and, in a larger sense, that of a people.  Filled with folklore and legend, it is set in a Caribbean countryside whose innocence has been violated by slavery and in the city, a place without love.  More than a novel, however, this story is structured as a song.  Its primary characters can be viewed as soloists, while the ancient river women so prominent in the novel serve as a chorus.
