Upward: A History of Norfolk State University, 1935 to 1975 by Lyman Beecher Brooks
Under the leadership of president Lyman Beecher Brooks from 1938 to his retirement in 1975, the venerable institution now known as Norfolk State University (NSU) progressed through four distinct growth phases—from the junior college unit of Virginia Union University to the Norfolk Polytechnic College, and from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College to Norfolk State College—achieving its present university status in 1979. Upward: A History of Norfolk State University, written Dr. Brooks and first published in 1983, details the history of NSU from its founding in 1935 to 1975. All the joys and promises, disappointments and frustrations of building and working in a predominantly black institution of higher education during the era of a segregated society and beyond are fully described in this rich volume. The work is alive with the stories of the many dedicated individuals who gave so generously of their time, talents, and money to help found NSU and ensure its growth. Over 70 photographs accompany this chronology, along with other appendices that present official documents and relevant articles pertaining to NSU’s founding.
