World War II:

An Account of Its Documents

Edited by James E. O'Neill and Robert W.Krauskopf

Although six decades have passed since the end of World War II, the outpouring of books and articles concerned with that conflict has not slackened with the passage of time. Interest in the subject remains high because of the richness of source materials relating to the war and the progressive lifting of restrictions on access to them.  World War II: An Account of Its Documents contains the eighteen papers presented at a National Archives conference devoted to Second World War research in the United States and abroad, wartime diplomacy, military biography, access to archival sources, the role of science and technology and of the wartime emergency agencies, and official historical programs. Among those scholars presenting papers were Selig Adler, Albert A. Blum, Stetson Conn, Russell H. Fifield, Noble Frankland, Lloyd C. Gardner, D. Clayton James, Henri Michel, Louis Morton, Carroll Pursell, Barbara W. Tuchman, and Pavel A. Zhilin.  James E. O’Neill and Robert W. Krauskopf served as conference directors and editors of this volume.

The National Archives conference series was initiated in 1967 to acquaint scholars with this wealth of materials and to provide a forum for the discussion of issues and problems relevant to both researchers and archivists. Conference papers were delivered by outstanding authorities in their fields and frequently by persons who, as emissaries, explorers, and administrators, influenced the course of events in our time.  It is hoped that these publications will prove to be a permanent contribution to scholarship and a reference source for scholars and students alike.
